Zelnorm is a medication commonly prescribed to treat constipation. The manufacturers, Novartis, voluntarily pulled it off the market after studies demonstrated that using Zelnorm can result in serious side effects.

What is Zelnorm?

Zelnorm is a medicine used to treat women who have irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). The common symptoms of ISB-C include: cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea. Zelnorm was designed to increase the progress of stools through the bowels.

Zelnorm Side Effects

Zelnorm side effects include:

  • severe chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • sudden onset of weakness
  • difficulty walking or talking

Other dangerous Zelnorm side effects are those symptoms associated with having heart attack or stroke.

If you are taking Zelnorm, please contact your healthcare professional to explore your treatment options. Always consult your physician before discontinuing any medication.

FDA Warning

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested the withdrawal of Zelnorm from the marketplace after 29 studies involving more than 18,000 patients found that those who took the medication had an increased risk of cardiac problems.
