The Remeron lawsuits began because pharmaceutical manufacturers did not adequately warn expectant mothers and physicians about Remeron and other brand name antidepressants—generally called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)—and their link with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN).
WHAT IS REMERON?
Remeron is the brand-name of an oral antidepressant medication. It belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Remeron balances out the chemicals in the brain thought to elevate mood, which are norepinephrine and serotonin.1
SSRIs are sold under these brand names:
- Celexa
- Prozac
- Cipralex
- Effexor
- Luvox
- Zoloft
- Paxil
REMERON SIDE EFFECTS
One of the dangerous Remeron side effects is its link to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN). PPHN has been more likely to occur in newborns if the birth mother took Remeron (or other SSRIs) during her first trimester. This link between Remeron and PPHN has resulted in Remeron lawsuits.
According to the February 9, 2006 report in the New England Journal of Medicine, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN) is a serious condition that occurs when “pulmonary arterial pressure remains high after birth and poorly oxygenated blood continues to be shunted to the systemic circulation.”2 The result is a lack of oxygen to the brain to the newborn, and in some cases is fatal. The damage of PPHN from Remeron has led to Remeron lawsuits because the issue could have been prevented if drug manufacturers had adequately warned expectant mothers and their doctors about the dangers.
PPHN can be treated to alleviate the immediate symptoms. Babies treated for PPHN at birth appeared normal following the treatment. Unfortunately, every second the newborn’s organs lacked oxygen could have caused serious damage that may not show up right away. Many children diagnosed with PPHN-related symptoms at birth may have developmental delays but these also may not show up until much later.
FDA WARNING
The FDA now prints an important warning regarding SSRIs, which includes the drug under the brand name Remeron. This FDA warning states that exposure to SSRIs during pregnancy has been linked to respiratory complications, including Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). The respiratory problems may be severe enough to require treatment or lengthy hospital stays.3
