Prozac Lawsuit

If you continued to take Prozac during the second half of your pregnancy and your child was diagnosed with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) or suffered breathing difficulties during birth, please contact us right away. The Simmons Firm would like to answer any questions you may have about pursuing a possible Prozac lawsuit to seek damages.*

If you took a Prozac and your child had respiratory difficulties at birth and is now experiencing developmental delays but was not diagnosed with PPHN in particular, the Simmons Firm would like to speak with you. Our PPHN lawyers may be able to shed light on the benefits of a Prozac lawsuit, even if your child was not diagnosed with PPHN.

The Prozac lawsuit stems from the insufficient warnings from drug manufacturers to expectant mothers and medical professionals about the link between Prozac and PPHN. If you have questions about this litigation, we would be happy to speak with you.

WHAT IS PROZAC?

Prozac (fluoxetine) is the brand-name of an oral medication used to treat depression. It belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs.  According to the Internet site Drugs.com, “Prozac affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.”1 Prozac better balances the chemicals, namely serotonin, in the brain.  More serotonin in the brain has shown to improve mood.

SSRIs are sold under numerous brand names including:

PROZAC SIDE EFFECTS

An expectant mother taking Prozac during pregnancy has an increased chance of giving birth to a newborn with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN). This dangerous Prozac side effect has resulted in defective drug lawsuits.

According to the February 9, 2006 report in the New England Journal of Medicine, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN) is a serious condition that occurs when “pulmonary arterial pressure remains high after birth and poorly oxygenated blood continues to be shunted to the systemic circulation.”2 Expectant mothers taking Prozac and the doctors prescribing it were not given adequate warnings about these dangerous, and sometimes fatal, Prozac side effects for newborns.

Newborns treated to alleviate the immediate symptoms of PPHN can appear normal after the treatment. Unfortunately, every second their organs lacked oxygen could have caused serious damage and/or developmental delays which may not show up for several months.

FDA WARNING

The FDA has released a warning stating that SSRIs taken during pregnancy puts newborns at a higher risk for PPHN.3
