If you took a Celexa and your child had breathing-related difficulties at birth and is now experiencing developmental delays, the Simmons Law Firm wants to talk to you. Our PPHN lawyers may be able to shed light on the benefits of a Celexa lawsuit, even if your child was not diagnosed with PPHN.
Due to inadequate prescription drug warnings from pharmaceutical manufacturers, mothers-to-be continued to take their prescribed antidepressant while they were pregnant. The antidepressants in a class known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), including the brand name Celexa, have been linked to serious birth defects, including Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN). Celexa and its link to PPHN is the subject of Celexa lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies.
WHAT IS CELEXA?
Celexa is the brand-name of an oral medication used to treat depression. It belongs to a group of prescription drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs, which work to manipulate serotonin absorption in the brain so that a better balance of serotonin (known to improve mood) is restored.1
SSRIs are sold under numerous brand names including:
CELEXA SIDE EFFECTS
Again, Celexa taken by a birth mother has been linked to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN) and has resulted in Celexa lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies who did not supply adequate prescription drug warnings.
According to the February 9, 2006 report in the New England Journal of Medicine, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborns (PPHN) is a serious condition that occurs when “pulmonary arterial pressure remains high after birth and poorly oxygenated blood continues to be shunted to the systemic circulation."2 The result is a lack of oxygen to the brain to the newborn. This damage was also preventable if doctors and their patients had adequate warnings about the dangers of taking Celexa and other SSRIs during the first trimester of pregnancy.
The good news about PPHN is that it can be treated to alleviate the immediate symptoms. These babies can appear normal after treatment. Unfortunately, the bad news is that every second their organs lacked oxygen could have caused serious damage which may not show up for several months.
Other bad news about PPHN is that many children who have PPHN-related symptoms at birth may later have marked developmental delays.
FDA WARNING
According to the following FDA warning regarding SSRIs (including Celexa):
Infants exposed to SSRIs during the third trimester have developed respiratory complications that required prolonged hospitalization, respiratory support, and tube feeding and may be at risk for persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).3
