Gadolinium Contrast Dye and Kidney Disease Patients

Gadolinium contrast dye poses a significant health risk to patients with kidney disease.  Gadolinium contrast dye, routinely injected into patients during an MRI, has been linked to Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) and Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD), a rare skin disease, placing thousands of people at risk for serious and permanent injuries and even death.  If you've been injured as a result of having gadolinium injected into your system, contact our gadolinium lawyers immediately for a free consultation.

Gadolinium injections are a routine part of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) scans. The gadolinium increases the contrast in the scans and helps doctors spot potential problems more accurately than with the scans by themselves. Unfortunately, some patients with chronic kidney problems have had serious, even lethal, problems following the contrast injections.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Advisory in December, 2006 about the potential link between Gadolinium and NSF/NFD.

At this time, the FDA had reports of 90 patients with moderate to end-stage kidney disease who developed Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis after an MRI with gadolinium-based contrast. When gadolinium contrast dye is injected into an otherwise-healthy patient, it is generally is eliminated by the kidneys after the examination, and does not cause problems. But those with kidney disease are unable expel gadolinium from their systems. Extended exposure to gadolinium can result in the development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), which is also known as Nephrogrenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD).

NSF and NFD can scar your skin and internal organs, severely restricting joints and movement. Unfortunately, there are no cures for these disorders, and eventually they can result in death.
