The purpose of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is to help alleviate or control symptoms of menopause that may include hot flashes, night sweats or vaginal atrophy. The most well-known brands of HRT include:
HRT was approved by the FDA more than 60 years ago to help alleviate or restrict the symptoms of menopause. In the beginning of its popularity, HRT was also declared to have the capability to reduce the risk of uterine cancer and other forms of cancer.
Over time, new risks and injuries associated with HRT use became apparent. Drug companies neglected to study the potential risks to women, despite the injuries and the pervasive use of HRT medications.
The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and units of the National Institute of Health (NIH), conducted a study in the late 1990s with a focus on women’s health and the use of HRT. Five years later, the study was terminated because the risks of taking the drug outweighed its benefits.
Now known as the WHI study, the famous research suggested a dramatic increase in the incidence of breast and ovarian cancer among women users of HRT medication.
