Simmons Hanly Conroy Gives Back
At Simmons Hanly Conroy, we are dedicated to our clients, our employees and our communities. We make it a priority to give back to the people and communities we represent and are one of the nation’s leading contributors to mesothelioma cancer research. Additionally, we support a wide variety of organizations in Illinois, St. Louis and throughout the nation, including the American Lung Association, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, United Way and more.
The firm has donated more than $20 million to cancer research and is a supporter of several mesothelioma foundations and programs.
The Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU
The firm has pledged $10.2 million to fund the cancer institute at Southern Illinois University (SIU). The institute provides extraordinary new resources to enhance treatments and implement the continuing search for a permanent cure. It is the largest single gift in the history of SIU and has established the university as home to one of the leading cancer facilities in the United States.
“We believe this is the only instance where a law firm has made such a sizable commitment in this area of vital medical research,” said John Simmons, founder of Simmons Hanly Conroy. “The firm has been at the forefront in fighting for justice for cancer victims. We will continue to show that commitment with our hearts and with our pocketbook.”
The Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation
In addition to the firm’s pharmaceutical work, we also help people who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. In 2010, the firm launched the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation, a private, nonprofit organization with a mission to help expert medical and scientific researchers make dramatic advances in mesothelioma treatment options for patients and their families. With approximately $8 million in donations, the foundation is currently supporting leading mesothelioma research programs throughout the country and continues to identify partnership opportunities.
Some of the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation research partners include the following:
- NYU Medical Center
- The Mesothelioma Center at Columbia University
- Mesothelioma Program at the University of Chicago Medical Center
- University of Pennsylvania Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program
- The Mesothelioma Specialty Care Center at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Cancer Centers
- Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, San Francisco

Miles for Meso
Miles for Meso is an initiative of the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation that helps communities host 5K races that benefit mesothelioma research. The firm hosts the flagship race every September in honor of National Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Since the first Miles for Meso race in 2009, nearly $400,000 has been raised for mesothelioma cancer research.

The Simmons Employee Foundation
In late 2004, the employees of Simmons Hanly Conroy came together to create a single, streamlined way for them to give back to the communities they are so proud to call home. The result of their creativity and heartfelt commitment is the Simmons Employee Foundation (SEF), which has provided more than $1 million in financial support to local charitable organizations in the St. Louis area.
SEF programing includes an annual golf tournament that benefits a different local charity each year, holiday food drive that raises tons of food for five Madison County food banks and additional sponsorships of local organizations.
